What is the history of the Arabic keyboard?

Arabic keyboards developed from Arabic typewriter layouts and were later adapted for computers as Arabic-script support became standard. Modern Arabic keyboards keep the familiar physical shape of a PC keyboard while assigning Arabic letters to the keys. Several closely related regional layouts exist, with Arabic 101 and 102 among the best-known computer arrangements.

Arabic is written from right to left, although numbers and Latin text can appear inside the same line. Users type individual Unicode characters while the operating system and font automatically form the connected letter shapes required by their position in a word. Arabic keyboards also provide access to hamza forms, diacritics, and Arabic punctuation.
