What is the history of the Cherokee keyboard?

Cherokee uses a syllabary created by Sequoyah in the early nineteenth century rather than an alphabet in which individual symbols represent separate consonants and vowels. As computers became capable of supporting the Cherokee script, dedicated keyboard layouts were created to make the syllabary practical to type.

Modern input options include the Cherokee Nation layout as well as phonetic systems that let users enter Cherokee through familiar Latin-key associations. Because the syllabary contains far more symbols than a Latin alphabet, modifier keys and additional keyboard levels are important parts of the layout.
