What is the history of the Russian keyboard?

The Russian keyboard uses the Cyrillic JCUKEN arrangement, named after the approximate sequence of letters on its upper row. Unlike phonetic Cyrillic layouts, JCUKEN was shaped by Russian typewriter and typing conventions rather than by matching Cyrillic letters to similarly sounding Latin keys.

The layout gives every normal Russian letter a direct position and includes punctuation adapted to Cyrillic typing. Russian phonetic or mnemonic layouts also exist and can be easier for learners who already touch-type on English QWERTY, but they are distinct from the standard Russian arrangement.
